Summer Game Fest 2023: Everything Announced

Summer Game Fest 2023 is a wrap, and Geoff Keighley's show kicked off a full week of reveals and updates on brand new and previously-announced games. The show was highlighted by a couple of big PlayStation 5 games: Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. We also got a surprise Prince of Persia game, gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1, a brand new 2D Sonic, and a lot more. Read on to learn everything announced at this year's Summer Game Fest.

We got our first real look at the second part in Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. We saw Cloud, Aerith, and the rest of the party riding through the expansive fields of the world outside of Midgar. We saw the party riding Chocobos, exploring towns, and discussing Sephiroth's inevitable return. Plus, Red XIII is joining the party this time as a playable fighter. The game is coming to PlayStation 5 early next year.

Just days after Sony shared a blowout gameplay presentation for Spider-Man 2, Summer Game Fest revealed the release date for the long-awaited PlayStation 5 exclusive: October 20. We also got the box art reveal showing Peter and Miles in costume shooting webs, and learned that Venom won't be Eddie Brock.

Summer Game Fest kicked off with a surprise: A brand new Prince of Persia game is coming out early next year. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is coming to PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on January 18, 2024. The game is a brand new sidescrolling action platformer with a vibrant art style.

Mortal Kombat 1 is out later this year, and we got a new look at gameplay for the next entry in the long-running series. We saw the new assist mechanic in action, where fighters can call in help from other Mortal Kombat characters in the middle of battle. And we saw a couple of fatalities, including a close-up shot of someone's rib cage, and someone getting their heart ripped out of their chest. So yeah, it's Mortal Kombat!

We got our first look at Fortnite: Chapter 4, Season 3 which is called Fortnite Wilds. The cinematic trailer showed characters hopping through forests before running into Optimus Prime, revealing the season's Transformers crossover.

Sega revealed Sonic Superstars, a brand new sidescrolling Sonic game with four-player co-op. Players can choose between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, and play with up to four players at the same time. The game is a sidescroller, but it takes a 3D art style similar to Classic Sonic's appearances in Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces. The game is out on all platforms this Fall.

Alan Wake 2 is coming on October 17, and we got our best look at the game so far at Summer Game Fest. The game has two playable characters -- Alan Wake and Saga Anderson -- with a 50-50 split between the two of them. Saga is an FBI agent in the Pacific Northwest, while Alan Wake is trying to escape from the nightmare dimension.

Like a Dragon: Gaiden - The Man Who Erased His Name officially has a release date of November 9. The game is a spinoff in the longrunning Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza) series, and it marks the return of protagonist Kazuma Kiryu.

We got a teaser trailer for Star Trek Infinite, a new grand strategy game coming from Paradox. The game is in development at Quantum League maker Nimble Giant Entertainment. Little was shown in the trailer beyond a Federation fleet approaching the Borg, along with images of iconic Star Trek characters. A full reveal is coming on June 16.

Saber Interactive, Focus Entertainment, and John Carpenter revealed John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, a new first-person shooter that's an ode to 80s action and horror. The reveal trailer showed well-equipped military vehicles and plenty of guns to take on overwhelming hordes of undead enemies. The game is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC next year.

We got our first look at SandLand, a new Bandai Namco game coming to PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game features Akira Toriyama's signature art style, and is based on a niche Toriyama manga from 2000. The gameplay showed tank and melee combat across the game's wide desert. There's no release date for this game yet.

We got an extended look at Palworld, a game about collecting monster friends and then equipping them with guns. The game is coming to early access next January. You only need to watch the trailer for a few seconds to see that it's a very different take on the monster collecting genre.

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria has a release window: Fall 2023. The game is described as a survival crafting adventure in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth, and it bears some resemblance to Deep Rock Galactic.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis' beta starts today and runs through June 28. The game was first announced in 2021, and is a compilation of every story told in the Final Fantasy VII universe. There will also be new story elements that focus on the origins of SOLDIER.

Dontnod brought its new game, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, to Summer Game Fest. The new gameplay footage showed the game's haunting atmosphere and combat featuring ghosts, wolves, and other apparitions.

Jason Isaacs -- who is best-known for playing Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise and Captain Hook in 2003's Peter Pan -- is joining Baldur's Gate 3 as a major villain. The actor has appeared in video games before, including Marvel's Midnight Suns and The Last Worker.

Will Arnett stopped by Summer Game Fest to show off a look at Peacock's Twisted Metal series, which debuts on Peacock on July 27. The clip showed Arnett's Sweet tooth in a fist fight with Anthony Mackie's John Doe.

Marvel Snap will soon introduce Conquest mode, a new competitive mode coming to the card battler on June 13. The mode will add a single-elimination tournament to the game, with the tournament taking place over the course of each season.

We got a fresh look at the upcoming season for Modern Warfare 2, which is coming on June 14. The trailer showed levels themed after a castle, soccer stadium, and an abandoned zoo.

We got a new look at Path of Exile 2, the upcoming isometric action RPG. The gameplay snippet we got was pretty short, showing a mage character ripping through monsters with electric magic. The end of the trailer teased that we will find out more on July 28.

Capcom pulled a nice bait-and-switch on us with this one, as Geoff Keighley originally introduced it as a follow-up announcement to Street Fighter 2. Instead, it turned out to be Capcom Collab 1 for Exoprimal, where a robotic Mecha Ryu is facing off against Exoprimal's dinosaurs. Exoprimal is launching on July 14, with the Street Fighter 6 collab coming this Fall.

Pinocchio soulslike Lies of P is now coming on September 19, which is a slight delay from its previous August date. However, players can play a demo of the game featuring the first two chapters of the game, which includes three boss fights and multiple locations to explore.

The Witcher Season 3 marks Henry Cavill's last season in the role of Geralt of Rivia, and we got a look at the first full trailer for the upcoming season. Ciri takes center stage in Season 3, as Geralt and Yennefer work to protect her. We saw some great swordplay from Henry Cavill, too.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 will feature three-player co-op throughout the campaign. We got a new gameplay trailer that showed returning protagonist Titus joined by two fellow space marines to rip through Tyranid hordes. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC sometime this winter.

The Summer Game Fest crowd burst into laughter with this amazing crossover reveal, where we learned Nicolas Cage is coming to Dead By Daylight. The infamous actor also appeared on stage for a chat. Cage called Dead By Daylight a chance for him to branch out, since he's never been involved in the video game industry before. The Nic Cage chapter comes to Dead By Daylight on July 25.

We got the reveal of Yes, Your Grace: Snowfall, a sequel to the 2020 indie game from Brave at Night and No More Robots. The original was all about making choices about how to rule your kingdom, and the sequel looks to take the idea and expand on it with a new wintry setting. The game is coming sometime next year.

The next trailer shown was for Witchfire, from the creators of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Painkiller, and Bulletstorm. We saw a very spooky forest filled with fog and skeletons, before transitioning into first-person shooter gameplay. We saw the player use a crossbow, shotgun, melee combat, and more in the gameplay snippet. Witchfire launches in early access on September 20.

Gunfire Games' Remnant 2 is launching next month, on July 25. The new trailer showed locations players will visit, including Narude, a new plane of darkness. Remnant 2 is the sequel to the game referred to as "Dark Souls with guns", and Remnant 2 is coming with procedurally generated levels and storylines.

We got an extended look at Immortals of Aveum, the first-person magic shooter coming from Ascendant Studios and Electronic Arts.

We got a new trailer for Under the Waves, a new game with an underwater setting from Parallel Studio. The gameplay shown is a mix of submarine piloting and scuba diving with an unsettling atmosphere. The game is coming out on August 29.

Honkai Star Rail -- the game from Genshin Impact developer Mihoyo -- got a new trailer showing off new characters in the RPG. We also got a release window for the PlayStation 5 version, as we now know it's coming in Q4 2023.

The Black Desert Online Land of the Morning Light expansion is coming on June 14, and a new trailer was revealed during Summer Game Fest. We saw a look at some mythical foes inspired by Korean folklore, and more.

We got a look at Lysfanga: The Time-Shift Warrior, a new hack-and-slash game where players can rewind time and create multiple copies of themselves. This stylish game has a similar vibe to Hades. The game is coming to PC later this year.

Cozy game FaeFarm is coming to Nintendo Switch and PC on September 8. The game lets you uncover the mysteries of the island alone or with up to three friends. The game supports both local and online multiplayer.

NCSoft's MMORPG got a new trailer today, showing off some epic enemies players will face when the game comes to Xbox Series X|S, P5, and PC.

Party Animals -- the brawler game featuring adorable animals -- is coming to PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on September 20. We got a new quick look at the game to celebrate the announcement.

In celebration of Porsche's 75th anniversary, the company is partnering with Xbox for a collection of new Xbox Series X consoles themed after Porsche cars. They aren't for sale, but you can enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win one.
