Minsforum Mercury Mini PC With AMD Phoenix Fits In The Palm of Your Hand, Features USB4 Type

Sep 16, 2023

Minisforum is showcasing its Mercury Mini PC at Computex which is a super-tiny design that packs AMD's Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APUs.

Minisforum gave a small teaser of the Mercury Mini PC last month when they announced the high-end Venus UM790 & UM780 Mini PCs. The difference between the Venus and Mercury Mini PCs is that the former packs the Ryzen 7040HS APUs while the latter packs the Ryzen 7040U APUs. Both of these are still Phoenix designs and carry up to 8 Zen 4 cores, 16 threads, and the latest RDNA 3 iGPU (Radeon 780M).

So talking about the specifications, the Minisforum Mercury EM780 Mini PC comes with the AMD Ryzen 7040U APU, & it's definitely the smallest Mini PC with such a processor. The whole PC is encased in a tiny plastic case that has vents on the top, sides, and bottom. The top motherboard has been custom designed for this Mini PC and features a square shape that is smaller than the palm of your hand. The APU is featured on the top side of the PCB and features active cooling technology. The bottom also features an active cooler that cools the M.2 (one slot on the backside of the board).

In terms of I/O, the Minisforum Mercury EM780 Mini PC comes with a USB4 port, a headphone jack, and a power On/Off button on the front. The sides also feature additional I/O such as a Kensington lock, a Micro SD card reader, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) port, another USB4 Type-C port, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (10 Gbps), and an HDMI output. The aluminum heat spreader can also be seen from the exhaust vents. This is a 15-30W APU so it doesn't require a whole lot of cooling.

The Minisforum AMD Mini PC comes with a GaN charger that is rated at 65W Max and the best part is that it comes with USB Type-C charging which is a lot more convenient than a standard power plug or DC-In port. There's no word on pricing yet but we expect the EM780 Mini PC around $350-$400 US which will make it a very nice machine that you can take anywhere with you. We can expect availability in the next couple of months.
