If you’re tired of manually flicking on the lights (or forgetting to leave one on), it’s time to automate them. We found a four-pack of Kasa smart bulbs on sale at Amazon for 43% off their list price, and reviewers absolutely adore them. The reasons seem endless: they allow you to use smart home assistants like Siri or Alexa to turn them on via voice command, you can set them on a timer to schedule when lights turn off and on via a smartphone app and make virtually any light fixture dimmable. They’re so simple to set up, too — one reviewer says, “[it] could not have been easier unless someone else installed it for me” — and from the same brand as our HuffPost reader-favorite smart plugs.

They’re also a home security secret.

As our HuffPost editorial director of life and commerce Kristen Aiken says, hers are “especially handy if you live alone and worry about security, because you can turn lights on and off when you’re away (to give the illusion that you’re home), and you can turn them on before you arrive to prevent yourself from having to fumble through the dark to reach your light switch.” All this convenience from a single lightbulb is hard to believe, but at $25.99 for four, that’s some bargain smart tech to try out.

This four-pack of smart bulbs just needs a Wi-Fi connection and a smartphone app to connect with your home’s ecosystem; no hub is required. Just screw one into a regular light fixture, pair it with your app, name the light (so you can specify which of the four you want on) and you’re set. From there, you automate them by placing them on a schedule, turn them on or off via app or voice control, dim them or change their colors on a tinted spectrum that ranges from white to yellow.

“My favorite part of my smart bulbs is that they allow me to turn my lights on and off remotely, with the Kasa app on my phone,” says Aiken. “I also use the dimmer function — the light in my kitchen, for instance, has always felt blindingly bright in the evenings, so I just grab my phone and dim it to 10%.”

Another reviewer used their bulbs to solve having to turn on their older, hard-to-reach lamp. “I ordered this for a touch-on/off lamp that’s behind my couch and kind of tricky to reach and touch,” they say, “but I really liked the lamp and didn’t want to replace it. Well, since it doesn’t have a normal on/off switch, a smart plug didn’t work for it. I was ready to tear the lamp apart and rip out the electronics to make it a normal lamp when I came up with this idea, and boom! Works perfectly.”

This could not have been easier unless some one else installed it for me. It took less than 5 minutes and it was up and running.” — Kindle Customer

“I am happy to have porch lights that can be set to go off and on without me having to manually do so. They are rated for indoor but they are covered and worked even when the weather was freezing. I had no problems connecting them to the Kasa app which was already set up to link to Alexa. Instructions for set up are clear. Being able to turn the front porch light on from my phone when I get home at an odd hour is priceless.” — Dawn

“I have not used this device with Alexa enabled smart speakers. All of my smart devices run on Google OS so I use the Google Assistant. I have not been disappointed with these light bulbs. I have bought two of these light bulbs. One light bulb is on a fan that has the on/off switch located on the fan itself. The other is located at my front door (outside in near 0°F weather currently in Jan). I leave the physical switches in the on position and simply control via smart devices. I have used the Kasa app on Android to control the lights but I have more devices that are linked up in the Google Assistant app so I prefer to use that instead. You can adjust the brightness setting from 1% to 100%. I have also set up routines like turning on the fan light to 1% brightness at the same time my alarm goes off in the morning. Somewhat of a gentle wake up call with the light turning on at such a low brightness. The full brightness of the light is enough for me and not overbearing. I have not done any testing to see if my internet connection is any slower due to each device connecting individually. No problems with the two I have so far. I also plan to add more soon.” — Antonio Barrigan

“I bought a single bulb from my local Amazon 4-star store to try it out, since I was sick of coming home to a dark home, and especially for the holidays when I would be out of town. It was a breeze to set up: You download the Kasa app to your mobile device, then you set up your account, and pair your bulb to your app. From there, you are able to control when the light turns on or off with multiple settings/schedule. You can have it turn on at the same time each night, but to mimic real life, I scheduled my desk lamp to turn on at sunset, when I would normally be patting around for the light switch. You are able to remotely dim your bulb, which is great when you’re trying to set up mood lighting. […] ” — Jenny E (This review has been edited for length. Read the full review.)

“Saw these on sale and decided to give them a chance. Glad I did! This was my first foray into smart lightbulbs. They helped solve a particular problem in my apartment. My dining room light fixture is controlled by a non-dimmable Z-Wave smart switch. I don’t have control over the hub, so I can’t replace the switch. Not without incurring the wrath of my landlord, anyway. Not being able to dim that light was miserable. Smart bulbs ending up being an ideal solution. The Kasa app works great, and is almost as convenient as a physical dimmer. Sometimes it’s better, since I don’t have to get up from the table. The app *does* allow three bulbs to be linked and dimmed as one, which is essential for my application. Setup was easy as well. […]” — Maximus (This review has been edited for length. The app made it easy to set the brightness and schedule for this bulb. I do have excellent WIFI coverage but I cannot say I have any complaints. If I was to complain it would be how Alexa and associated hub and devices need to grow. They feel disconnected but function. I believe by now the integration should be better than Apple’s Homekit. So you have Google’s crap smart home, Amazon’s super affordable solutions, and Apple’s exclusive club of expensive devices that work really well and have a nice interface.” — Jamie Marvel

The 2700k color temp is perfect (I’m very picky about this) and the dimmability is great. Was very easy to set up on our wifi network and had no issues connecting to the Alexa app.” — Wes
